Western Energy Services Corp. (Corporate) is an oilfield service company which provides contract drilling services through Horizon Drilling in Canada and Stoneham Drilling Corporation in the United States. In addition, Western provides well servicing through Eagle Well Servicing in Canada, and provides rental services through Aero Rental Services in Canada.
Position Summary
The Top Drive Coordinator is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the company’s fleet of automated drilling equipment, including top drives, floor wrenches, and catwalks. This role provides a combination of office-based coordination, remote technical support, preventative maintenance planning, and occasional field assistance when required to support operations, inspections, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide technical support and best-practice guidance to field personnel relating to the operation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of automated drilling equipment including Tesco, Canrig, Foremost, FDS, and Ja-co systems.
- Act as a primary point of contact for equipment troubleshooting and assist with hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues in real time.
- Coordinate third-party vendors, field service requirements, equipment repairs, and transportation logistics including hotshots when required.
- Support preventative maintenance initiatives and proactive equipment reliability programs.
- Review and assist with oil sample analysis data and help identify proactive corrective actions to improve equipment life and reduce downtime.
- Maintain and manage critical spare parts inventory, assist with shop inventory organization, order required parts and materials, and generate purchase orders as needed.
- Track damaged equipment requiring repair and coordinate repair status and follow-up.
- Work collaboratively with rig personnel to improve operational practices that positively impact drilling performance and equipment reliability.
- Conduct occasional field visits for inspections, operational support, troubleshooting assistance, and reporting as operational needs require. While field support is an important component of the role, the position is primarily coordination and support focused.
- Participate in an after-hours support rotation on a “1 week on / 2 weeks off” schedule.
- Promote and adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with automated drilling equipment including top drives, floor wrenches, and catwalks.
- Strong hydraulic and electrical troubleshooting knowledge, both practical and theoretical.
- Good understanding of PLC systems, 24VDC relay control logic, and automated control systems.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication, follow-up, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel with the ability to quickly learn internal software systems.
- Experience with inventory coordination, parts ordering, and maintenance tracking is considered an asset.
- Must possess valid safety tickets and maintain the ability to travel to field locations when operationally required.
- Previous drilling experience in Derrickhand and/or Driller roles is considered an asset.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and support operations with minimal supervision.
- Detail-oriented with strong time management skills and a positive, team-focused attitude.
